Entry requirements

Detailed entry requirements

Bologna's Mathematics master asks for a three-year degree in Mathematics or Physics, or at least 48 maths credits plus 12 in physics or computing, English at B2 and a committee check of your academic record, with an oral interview if needed. Reviewed 8 October 2026. [1]

Degree and credit requirements

You need a three-year first cycle degree in Mathematics or Physics (classes L-35 or L-30), or a foreign qualification recognised as suitable under Italian rules that gives access to a similar master's programme in the country where it was issued. [1][2]

Without a degree in those classes, your first degree must include at least: [1]

  • 48 CFU in mathematics: sectors MAT/01 to MAT/09.
  • 12 CFU in physics or computing: sectors FIS/01 to FIS/08, INF/01 or ING-INF/05, with at least 6 in physics (FIS/01 to FIS/08).

If you do not meet all the curricular requirements, you cannot register for the programme. The call does not offer a route to make up missing credits. [1]

What this means for your transcript

Italian CFU and the credits on a foreign transcript are not the same unit, and the committee reads the content of the exams you passed, not just your total. As a guide, based on the rule above:

  • Usually a fit: a three-year B.Sc. in Mathematics or Physics.
  • Check carefully: a B.Sc. in Statistics or Computer Science, or a B.Tech or B.E., where the maths units must add up to 48 credits and the physics units to at least 6.
  • Often short: a BCA, B.Com, BBA or BA, which rarely reach 48 credits in mathematics.

You upload a description of the content of each exam in your bachelor's, so the syllabus of each maths unit matters as much as its title. [1]

English

English at CEFR level B2 or higher, proven at the application stage with a recognised certificate. The University Language Centre publishes the list of accepted certificates, and the call does not print specific test scores. [1] The programme page also lists other routes: a degree taught entirely in English, a B2-level exam from an earlier university career, native-speaker status or the Language Centre's online test. [2]

Personal competencies and interview

A committee checks every application. Graduates with a final mark of at least 90/110 in class L-35 or L-30 meet this requirement directly. For other applicants, including holders of foreign qualifications when the committee decides it is needed, there is an oral interview to show that you can master the subjects in the programme syllabus. If you do not pass the interview, you cannot register. [1]

For 2026/27, intake 1 interviews ran between 22 April and 6 May 2026, and intake 2 interviews for foreign degrees on 2 or 3 July 2026. [2]

2026/27 deadlines

  • Intake 1 (EU and non-EU): applications from 2 February to 13 April 2026 at 1:00 p.m., results from 8 May 2026.
  • Intake 2 (EU and non-EU): applications from 14 April to 29 June 2026 at 1:00 p.m., results from 24 July 2026.
  • Intake 3 (EU candidates only): applications from 30 June to 3 September 2026 at 1:00 p.m.

The standard deadline to pay the enrolment fee was 29 October 2026, with late payment until 19 November 2026 subject to a surcharge. You could apply before graduating, but the degree had to be obtained by 31 December 2026, otherwise registration is cancelled. The next call sets the 2027/28 dates. [1]

Documents and non-EU steps

Applications are made on Studenti Online and must include: [1]

  • a valid identity document, or a passport if your ID has no English translation
  • your degree certificate translated into Italian or English, with the transcript of records and Diploma Supplement where available, or your list of exams if you have not yet graduated
  • a B2 English certificate
  • a CV
  • a description of the content of the exams in your bachelor's, if it was not taken at Bologna

Mandatory documents that are missing or only partly uploaded by the deadline mean the application is not considered. Non-EU applicants living abroad must also pre-enrol on Universitaly and request a study visa. At matriculation, foreign qualifications must be translated and their authenticity and value verified where required, and originals are shown in Bologna. For 2026/27, careers had to be activated by 26 February 2027. [1]

Sources and verification

Checked by the ApplyAZ admissions team against the university's official documents listed below. Entry rules can change with each new call, and we re-check them before every application.

  1. University of Bologna, Department of Mathematics. Admission notice to the Second Cycle Degree Programme in Mathematics (LM-40, code 6730), academic year 2026/27. Reviewed 8 October 2026.

About the programme

Mathematics is a two-year second cycle degree (laurea magistrale, class LM-40, code 6730) at the University of Bologna, run by the Department of Mathematics in Bologna. Access is open, with no cap on places, but every applicant must meet the entry requirements and pass a committee check of personal competencies. [1][2]

The programme lists English and Italian as teaching languages and has three curricula: Advanced Mathematics for Applications, which is its international curriculum, plus Generale and Didattico. It aims to train specialist mathematicians with advanced skills for complex problems in science, technology and education. [2]

What you will study

The 2026/27 study plan for Advanced Mathematics for Applications totals 120 CFU. The first year starts with two compulsory units, Advanced Mathematical Analysis and Riemannian Geometry (6 CFU each), followed by elective groups that include: [2]

  • Geometry and analysis: Representation Theory, PDEs, Toric Geometry and Applications, Calculus of Variations, Real and Harmonic Analysis
  • Applied and computational mathematics: Numerical Methods, Numerical Differential Equations, Mathematics for Complex Systems, Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Computation
  • Probability: Stochastic Calculus I and II
  • Data and machine learning: Topological Data Analysis, Introduction to Machine Learning, Matrix Tensor Techniques for Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and Decision Making, Mathematical and Machine Learning Methods in Imaging

The second year includes a 6 CFU internship, at least 18 CFU of free-choice units and 24 CFU for the final examination, which can combine a dissertation with an internship to prepare it, in Italy or abroad. [2]

Fees and scholarships

Bologna's fees are set by family income (ISEE), with a maximum that depends on the programme. International students whose income and assets are only abroad cannot submit an ISEE and use a separate documentation route for fee reductions. [1] Full exemption is granted to first-year students with a low ISEE, so this programme can be tuition-free for eligible students. [2]

The regional body ER.GO runs scholarships, residence places and other benefits through its own yearly call, separate from the admission application. The Department of Mathematics also funds four scholarships reserved for international students who enrol in the Advanced Mathematics for Applications curriculum, with two calls that open alongside intakes 1 and 2. [1]

How to apply from outside the EU

For 2026/27, non-EU applicants could apply in intake 1 (2 February to 13 April 2026, 1:00 p.m.) or intake 2 (14 April to 29 June 2026, 1:00 p.m.). Intake 3 was reserved for EU candidates. Applications go through Bologna's Studenti Online system with your degree, transcript, course descriptions, a B2 English certificate and a CV. [1]

Admitted non-EU applicants living abroad then complete Universitaly pre-enrolment and apply for a study visa. At matriculation they pay the first instalment, upload the degree and visa, and show original documents in Bologna, where the university verifies the qualification's translation, authenticity and value where required. The 2027/28 calendar is not yet published. [1]

How ApplyAZ helps

ApplyAZ is an Italy-based consultancy that works only with public universities. We can include this programme in a shortlist of 20 to 30 English-taught programmes that fit your profile, so your plan never rests on a single application.

For eligible students who start with us, a named person owns each stage, from A to Z:

  • We check your transcript against Bologna's entry rules for this programme.
  • We write your CV and a tailored statement of purpose.
  • We prepare and submit your Studenti Online application and Universitaly pre-enrolment.
  • We help you declare your family income for reduced fees and file your ER.GO Emilia-Romagna scholarship application at the right time and in the right format.
  • We prepare your visa file.

With operations in all 20 Italian regions, we follow each region's scholarship rules and deadlines as they change. The university decides admission, the region decides the scholarship and the consulate decides the visa, so no one can promise an outcome. You pay in milestones, and every service you pay for is either delivered or its fee is refunded (terms apply).

Programmes at Italian public universities can be tuition-free for eligible students. Check if you are eligible and book a one-to-one consultation session with one of our Italy experts, or see how ApplyAZ works.

Questions and answers

What bachelor's degree do I need for Bologna's Mathematics master?

A three-year degree in Mathematics or Physics, or a recognised foreign equivalent. Without one, your degree must include at least 48 credits in mathematics and 12 in physics or computing, with at least 6 in physics. [1]

Is there an entrance exam?

No written test. A committee reviews your academic record. Italian graduates in maths or physics with at least 90/110 are exempt, while others, including holders of foreign degrees when the committee decides, sit an oral interview on the programme syllabus. [1]

What English level is required? Do I need IELTS?

English at CEFR B2 or higher, proven with a certificate from the University Language Centre's recognised list. The call does not print specific scores, and the programme page lists other routes, such as a degree taught entirely in English, so we check which proof of B2 your file can use. [1][2]

When is the deadline for non-EU students?

For 2026/27, non-EU applicants could use intake 1, which closed on 13 April 2026, or intake 2, which closed on 29 June 2026, both at 1:00 p.m. Intake 3 was for EU candidates only. The 2027/28 dates are not yet published. [1]

Can I apply before I graduate?

Yes. For 2026/27, you could apply and enrol before graduating, but the degree had to be obtained by 31 December 2026, otherwise the registration is cancelled. [1]

I have a B.Tech or a B.Sc. in Statistics. Can I apply?

Possibly. Your transcript must show at least 48 credits in mathematics and 12 in physics or computing, 6 of them physics. Engineering and statistics degrees often include maths and physics, but may fall short of 48 maths credits, and the call offers no route to make up missing credits. [1]

Are there scholarships for international students?

Yes. The Department of Mathematics funds four scholarships reserved for international students in the Advanced Mathematics for Applications curriculum, with calls that open alongside intakes 1 and 2. Eligible students can also apply for the ER.GO regional scholarship. [1]

What does the programme cover?

The international curriculum, Advanced Mathematics for Applications, combines advanced analysis and Riemannian geometry with electives in PDEs, numerical methods, stochastic calculus, quantum computation and machine learning, then an internship and a final dissertation in the second year. [2]

Can someone handle my whole application to Mathematics at Bologna?

Yes. ApplyAZ, an Italy-based consultancy that works only with public universities, checks your transcript against Bologna's rules for this programme, handles the application and Universitaly pre-enrolment, helps you file the ER.GO Emilia-Romagna scholarship application at the right time and in the right format, and prepares your visa file, for eligible students.
