Bologna's GIOCA master asks for a bachelor's in a listed arts, humanities, communication or political science field, or any degree with at least 40 credits in listed economics, management, law, history or social science subjects, plus English at B2 and a selection made of a CV assessment and an online interview. Degree requirement

You need a foreign qualification recognised as suitable that gives access to second-level degrees in the country where you earned it, or an Italian bachelor's in one of these classes: [1]

• L-1 Cultural Heritage and L-43 Conservation and Restoration Technologies
• L-3 Visual Arts, Music, Performing Arts and Fashion
• L-5 Philosophy, L-10 Literature and L-11 Modern Languages and Cultures
• L-20 Communication Sciences and L-36 Political Science and International Relations

A degree in any other class also qualifies if it includes at least 40 CFU in listed subject areas: economics, economic policy, public finance, econometrics, business economics, management, organisation and corporate finance, statistics and demography, mathematics and computing, commercial, economic, public and administrative law, geography, medieval, modern and contemporary history, sociology, landscape architecture and history of architecture. For a foreign degree, a committee checks the content of your studies against these requirements, based on its learning objectives and programmes. [1]

What this means for your transcript

Italian CFU and foreign credits are not the same unit, and the committee looks at what you studied. As a guide, based on the rule above:

• Usually a fit: a BA in Fine Arts, Performing Arts, History, English or another literature, Languages, Philosophy, Political Science or Mass Communication, or a B.Com, BBA or BA in Economics with a solid block of economics, management or statistics.
• Check carefully: a B.Tech, B.E., BCA or B.Sc., which can count maths and computing subjects toward the 40 credits, but where the committee also scores how well your profile fits cultural management.
• Often short: degrees with little economics, management, humanities or social science, such as nursing, pharmacy or life sciences.

English

English at CEFR B2 or higher, held by the application deadline. The call accepts any of the following: [1]

• A TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge English, Trinity College London or OOPT certificate at B2 or above, issued no more than six years before the deadline.
• A bachelor's or master's degree taught in English, if your transcript, degree certificate or a letter from your university states it.
• A university English exam passed at B2 or above, with the level shown on the transcript or in a signed letter. A transcript that only says English, with no level, is not enough.
• Native-speaker status, by self-declaration, or a B2 exam at a university language centre.

Selection

There is no written test. Selection has two phases and a score out of 100: [1]

• CV and qualifications: up to 40 points, with up to 15 for academic merit and up to 25 for how well your curriculum fits the programme's aims. You need at least 25 out of 40 to reach the interview.
• Interview: up to 60 points, held online in English, on your aptitude and the fit of your profile with the programme.

You need at least 60 out of 100 overall to be ranked. There are two rankings, one for each quota, and a tie goes to the younger candidate. Unfilled places go through up to three reallocation rounds in ranking order for candidates who declare interest. [1]

Places

For 2026/27 there were 50 places: 25 for Italian, EU and equivalent non-EU applicants, and 25 reserved for non-EU citizens living abroad. Unused places in the non-EU quota pass to EU and equivalent applicants. [1]

2026/27 deadlines

• Applications: 17 February to 28 April 2026 at 13:00.
• Interview list: by 29 May 2026.
• Interviews: 3 to 5 June 2026, online.
• Rankings: 18 June 2026.
• Enrolment of winners: 23 June to 8 July 2026, then reallocation rounds until 7 August 2026.

You could apply before graduating if you finished your bachelor's by 31 December 2026. The 2027/28 call sets the next dates. [1]

Documents and non-EU steps

On Studenti Online you upload a CV on the programme's compulsory CV form, your passport or ID, your residence permit if you have one, your English proof and a certificate of your exams and grades. Other certificates of training or skills are optional. [1]

Non-EU citizens living abroad must also submit pre-enrolment to the Italian diplomatic mission through Universitaly. After winning a place, they upload their degree documents and entry visa, the translation, authenticity and value of foreign documents are verified where required, and originals are checked in Bologna after the first fee instalment. Career activation had to be completed by 26 February 2027. [1]

What bachelor's degree do I need for GIOCA at Bologna?

A bachelor's in cultural heritage, arts, music or performing arts, philosophy, literature, modern languages, communication, political science or conservation, or a foreign equivalent. Any other degree qualifies if it includes at least 40 Italian credits in listed subjects such as economics, management, statistics, law, history or sociology. [1]

Is there an entrance exam?

No written test. A committee scores your CV and qualifications out of 40, with 15 for academic merit and 25 for fit with the programme, and you need 25 to reach an online interview in English worth 60 points. The minimum overall score is 60 out of 100. [1]

What English level is required? Do I need IELTS?

English at B2 by the application deadline. IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge, Trinity or OOPT certificates count if issued within six years. A degree taught in English also counts if your transcript, degree certificate or a university letter states it, so we check whether your documents can prove it. [1]

How many places are there for non-EU students?

For 2026/27, 25 of the 50 places were reserved for non-EU citizens living abroad, with their own ranking. Unused places in that quota pass to EU and equivalent applicants. [1]

When is the deadline for non-EU students?

For 2026/27, applications ran from 17 February to 28 April 2026 at 13:00. Interviews were held online on 3 to 5 June 2026 and rankings published on 18 June. The 2027/28 call is not yet published. [1]

Can I apply before I graduate?

Yes. For 2026/27 you could take part if you graduated by 31 December 2026. Candidates who missed that date were excluded, even if already ranked or enrolled. [1]

I have a B.Com or a B.Tech. Can I apply?

A B.Com often meets the 40-credit rule through economics, management and statistics subjects. A B.Tech can count maths and computing credits toward the 40, but the committee also scores how well your profile fits cultural management, so we check both before you apply. [1]

What jobs does GIOCA lead to?

The university lists three roles: cultural project manager, working as a freelance consultant or an employee, manager in cultural organisations, and fundraiser. A laurea magistrale also gives access to PhD programmes. [2]
