For a university course in Italy you need a type D study visa, "Immatricolazione Università", valid for 365 days with multiple entries (100 days if you must still sit an admission or language test in Italy or do not yet hold your diploma). The national rules for 2026/27 and 2027/28 require three things beyond your admission: EUR 10,179.85 a year in lawful, traceable funds, suitable accommodation in Italy and adequate health insurance. The exact document list is set by the consulate for your country of residence.
Where things stand: 8 October 2026
One ministry circular covers both 2026/27 and 2027/28. Visa applications for degree courses must be lodged by 30 November 2026 for 2026/27 and by 31 October 2027 for 2027/28.
Some consulate checklists online are still from 2025 and show the old funds figure. We always work from a checklist dated for the student's academic year.
In short
- Visa: type D for study, university enrolment, 365 days, multiple entries.
- Funds: EUR 10,179.85 a year, preferably the student's own or the family's (relatives up to the fourth degree).
- Scholarships count only when awarded. Applying for, or being eligible for, a DSU grant does not count.
- Accommodation: applying for, or being eligible for, a university residence is not proof.
- Timing: consulates state processing can take up to 90 days, and you apply for the residence permit within 8 working days of arrival.
This guide is part of our Study in Italy guide; the visa is Step 5 of studying in Italy.

Check your eligibilityWhat documents do you need for an Italy student visa?
The checklist below combines the national circular with current 2026/27 consulate checklists. Your consulate's own list always has the final word, so we build each file from the checklist of the consulate that covers the student.
| Document | What it must show | Rule source |
|---|---|---|
| Passport | Valid beyond the visa: for example, issued within the last 10 years, at least 3 months' validity after the visa and 2 blank pages | Consulate checklist (Bengaluru 2026/27) |
| Photographs | Recent passport-size photos on a white background | Consulate checklist |
| Visa application form | Completed and signed | Consulate checklist |
| Universitaly pre-enrolment summary | The summary of your application as validated by the university | Circular, Part II, point 3 |
| Qualification | Your degree or diploma with CIMEA statements of comparability and verification, or a Declaration of Value plus an authenticity check where the Declaration does not confirm it | Circular, Part II, point 3 |
| Transcript and course programmes | Exams passed and course content; a Diploma Supplement can serve | Circular |
| Language certificate | For courses not taught in Italian, at least B2 in the course language; for Italian-taught courses, the university's Italian test at B2 or above | Circular, Part I, point 6, and Part II, point 3 |
| Proof of funds | EUR 10,179.85 a year from lawful, traceable sources, with bank statements (6 months in Bengaluru, 3 months in Abu Dhabi) | Circular, Part II, point 2(a); consulate checklists |
| Accommodation | Suitable accommodation in Italy (Bengaluru asks for at least 30 days) | Circular, Part II, point 2(b) |
| Health insurance | Adequate cover for medical care and hospitalisation; many consulates set EUR 30,000 as the minimum | Circular, Part II, point 2(c); consulate checklists |
| Travel | A ticket reservation, for example one-way plus funds for the return | Consulate checklist |
| Fee receipt | Receipt of the university enrolment fee, where the consulate asks for it | Consulate checklist (Bengaluru) |
How much money do you need to show for an Italy student visa?
EUR 10,179.85 a year for 2026/27 and 2027/28, the amount in the Interior Ministry's table referenced by the circular. The funds must come from lawful and traceable sources and should preferably be your own or your family's, meaning relatives up to the fourth degree. The consulate checks where the money came from, how the account has moved and whether the amount fits the family's income, and it must be reasonable to expect the funds to last for the rest of the course. Revolving accounts, or blocked accounts in the student's name, are preferred.
The circular gives no monthly figure. One embassy, Addis Ababa, uses EUR 783.06 a month (the annual amount divided by 13), but that is not a national rule. Our proof of funds guide covers loans, sponsors and timing in detail.
Do scholarships count as proof of funds?
Yes, if they are awarded. Funding from Italian institutions, including universities, from local governments or from reliable foreign bodies counts. A regional DSU scholarship counts only with an explicit award letter: the circular states that merely applying for one, or meeting its eligibility requirements, cannot be counted. If the DSU result is not available by the visa appointment, the family needs to show the full amount itself.
What counts as proof of accommodation?
A document showing suitable accommodation in Italy, such as a rental contract or a hotel or residence booking. The circular states that an application for, or eligibility for, a place in a university residence is not valid proof. Consulates set the minimum period: Bengaluru's 2026/27 checklist asks for at least 30 days of board and lodging.
How do consulates differ on the student visa?
The national rules are the same everywhere; the checklists are not. These are four 2026/27 or 2027/28 examples.
| Consulate | Funds shown | Insurance | Other points on the checklist |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bengaluru (VFS), 2026/27 and 2027/28 | EUR 10,179.85; original 6-month bank statement, stamped and signed | Valid at least one year or the whole course | Two copies of the Universitaly summary; processing up to 90 days |
| Abu Dhabi, 2027/28 | EUR 10,179.85 a year; 3-month bank statements | Full and unlimited hospitalisation cover | Apply no more than 6 months and no less than 15 days before travel; up to 90 calendar days |
| Belgrade, 2026/27 | EUR 10,179.85 | At least EUR 30,000 for urgent medical expenses | Return ticket reservation as proof of funds to return |
| Addis Ababa, 2026/27 | EUR 783.06 for each month of the academic year | At least EUR 30,000 for the whole stay | Monthly funds rule specific to this embassy |
Some consulates add steps: Mumbai, for example, books study visas only by appointment and requires a video interview after submission. Older checklists still online may limit sponsors to parents only; the 2026 circular allows relatives up to the fourth degree, so the consulate's current checklist is the one we follow.
When should you apply, and what happens after the visa?
- Deadline: for bachelor's and master's degree courses, by 30 November 2026 for 2026/27 and by 31 October 2027 for 2027/28. Universities may set earlier dates.
- Processing: consulates state up to 90 days, longer if more documents are requested.
- After arrival: apply for the residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) within 8 working days.
- Refusal or withdrawal must be recorded on Universitaly.
The order matters: visa applications use the validated Universitaly summary, so start with our Universitaly pre-enrolment guide.
