The credit rule
You need a first-level degree, or an equivalent qualification earned abroad and recognised as suitable. Under the 2026/27 regulations, your first degree must include: [1][2]
- At least 35 CFU in basic subjects: mathematics, physics, chemistry, statistics and related computing sectors, with at least 15 CFU in mathematical analysis (MATH-03/A).
- At least 20 CFU in core industrial engineering subjects of the Italian L-9 class, from listed sectors in areas such as industrial, materials, measurement and chemical engineering, bioengineering and automation.
- At least 10 CFU in bioengineering (IBIO-01/A).
- At least 5 CFU in medical disciplines, from listed biological, medical and psychology sectors.
Each credit can be counted only once. If credits are missing, you can make them up through single courses and enrol the following academic year. [1]
The university's 2026/27 admissions portal listing and the degree framework still show an older breakdown: 39 CFU in basic subjects (at least 21 in maths, computing and statistics, 15 of them in mathematical analysis, and 18 in physics and chemistry), plus 6 CFU each in mechanics, electronics, biomedical engineering and biology. What this means for your transcript
The rule counts credits by subject area, so the committee looks at your subjects, not just your total. As a guide, based on the rule above:
- Usually a fit: a B.Tech or B.E. in Biomedical Engineering or Bioengineering with solid maths and physics, some mechanics or electronics, and courses such as physiology or anatomy.
- Check carefully: a B.Tech or B.E. in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical or Instrumentation Engineering often covers maths, physics and the industrial engineering block but can lack the 10 bioengineering and 5 medical credits.
- Often short: a B.Sc. in Biotechnology, Biology or Life Sciences may cover the medical block but usually lacks the 15 credits of mathematical analysis and the engineering blocks. A BCA or B.Sc. in Computer Science usually lacks the bioengineering, medical and industrial engineering credits.
For degrees from India and Pakistan, Bergamo's pre-evaluation page states that a general bachelor's does not give access to a master's and an Honours bachelor's is needed. [7]

English at CEFR level B2 or higher. Your level is checked by interview, or by a certificate the university recognises, which replaces that check. Native English speakers are exempt. [1][4]
The 2026/27 admissions listing for this programme accepts certificates such as IELTS Academic 5.5 to 6.5, TOEFL iBT 79 to 95, Pearson Academic 46 to 64, Cambridge First at grade B or C and Trinity ISE II, or a certificate from your university's registrar or international office confirming that your degree was taught entirely in English. Unofficial certificates and self-declarations are not accepted. [4]

Selection and interview
There is no written entrance test. After checking the credit requirements, the admissions committee assesses your personal preparation. For Italian graduates, a final mark of at least 80/110 is enough, and other candidates have an individual interview on topics such as medical devices, medical imaging, biomedical signal and data processing, modelling, biomechanics, biomaterials and basic sciences. The course website publishes the format and reading list each year. [1]
Foreign applicants who need a visa have their interview during the online pre-evaluation, and it replaces this check. In the 2026/27 calls, online interviews ran from February to April 2026. [1][6]
Deadlines and applying before you graduate
For 2026/27 entry, non-EU applicants had two online pre-evaluation calls: [6]
- First call: 24 November 2025 to 15 January 2026, for open-access courses, with results by 31 March 2026.
- Second call: 1 to 31 January 2026, with results by 30 April 2026.
For 2027/28, the university's pre-evaluation page lists a first call from November 2026 to January 2027, with interviews in February and March 2027 and rankings by 31 March 2027, and a second call in January 2027, with exact dates still to be confirmed. [7]
Medical Engineering is not among the limited-access courses, so in the 2026/27 calls applicants still finishing their degree could apply with a certificate of their expected graduation date, as long as they graduated by 30 June 2026. The programme also allows pre-registration if, by the official enrolment date, you have no more than three exams and 24 ECTS left. [2][6][7]

- Compulsory: your bachelor's degree, or a certificate of your expected graduation date, and your transcript for the last three or four years or a Diploma Supplement, both translated into English or Italian; an English certificate; and a copy of a valid passport, the only identity document accepted. About the programme
Medical Engineering is a two-year master's degree (laurea magistrale, class LM-21 biomedical engineering) worth 120 ECTS and taught in English. Hands-on work is built into the second year through a Biomechanical Lab and an ICT/Electronic Lab, each worth 9 ECTS.
