The Master in Mathematics at the University of Trieste is a two-year, 120 ECTS degree (class LM-40) taught in English in collaboration with SISSA, with curricula in advanced mathematics, computational mathematics and modelling, and mathematics education. Students resident abroad pay a reduced flat fee, and ARDiS scholarship winners are exempt.
Entry requirements
- A bachelor's degree in Mathematical Sciences (L-35) or Physical Sciences (L-30), or an equivalent foreign degree.
- Graduates from other fields need at least 36 CFU in mathematics (MAT/* sectors).

- L-35 or L-30 graduates with 80/110 or more are admitted automatically; others are assessed by the admission committee on their record and course syllabi, possibly with an oral interview.

About the programme
The Master in Mathematics is a two-year master's degree (laurea magistrale, class LM-40, Mathematics) worth 120 ECTS, run by the Department of Mathematics, Informatics and Geosciences (MIGe) of the University of Trieste. It is taught in English in classrooms in Trieste and offered in collaboration with SISSA, the International School for Advanced Studies.
The degree builds high-level knowledge of mathematics and the ability to set up and solve complex problems, including in applied settings. It suits graduates in mathematics or physics, and graduates from other fields with a strong maths component, who are aiming at research, industry or teaching.
What you will study
You choose one of three curricula. Advanced Mathematics focuses on theory, Computational Mathematics and Modelling combines maths, computer science and statistics to model and solve problems in life sciences, economics and engineering, and Mathematics Education prepares for secondary school teaching and science communication. - Mathematics Education, Physics Education Laboratory and Technology in Mathematics Education
- An internship and a 30 ECTS thesis
How the programme is taught
Teaching combines lectures with exercise classes, laboratory work and seminars, and exams can be written, oral or seminar based. The thesis is an original dissertation written with a supervisor and presented in a public seminar. Within the Advanced Mathematics curriculum, a joint study programme with SISSA trains students for research and leads to a SISSA diploma for those who meet its goals; SISSA offers some scholarships for it each year. A double master's degree with the University of Ljubljana lets up to five students a year take their second year at the partner university. Part-time enrolment is also possible.

Admission is non-competitive, with 10 places for visa applicants in 2026/27. Mathematics or physics graduates with 80/110 or more enter automatically; others are judged by a committee on their record and syllabi. You upload a self-assessment questionnaire with your request on Esse3, where the 2026/27 window runs from 20 April 2026 to 29 January 2027.
Non-EU applicants first have their qualification checked on apply.units.it (€40, up to three programmes; 2026/27 rounds ended 15 January and 30 April 2026), then pre-enrol on Universitaly and apply for a type D study visa.
