- A bachelor's in mathematical sciences (Italian class L-35) or the equivalent class of earlier systems.
- Another bachelor's with at least 54 CFU in mathematics (sectors MAT/01 to MAT/09, now the MATH groups), computer science (INF/01 or ING-INF/05), physics (FIS/01 or FIS/08) or statistics (SECS-S/01 or SECS-S/06). At least 30 of these CFU must be in algebra, geometry and mathematical analysis (MATH-02/A, MATH-02/B and MATH-03/A).
- A degree obtained abroad and recognised as equivalent. The admission committee judges whether it is suitable from your study record and the documents you submit.

What this means for your transcript
Italian CFU and the credits on a foreign transcript are not the same unit, and the committee looks at the subjects you studied. As a guide, based on the rule above:
- Usually a fit: a B.Sc. Honours in Mathematics, or a B.Sc. with mathematics as a main subject that includes real analysis, abstract and linear algebra, and geometry.
- Check carefully: a B.Sc. in Physics or Statistics, a general B.Sc. with physics, chemistry and maths, or a B.Tech or B.E. These often reach 54 credits across maths, computing, physics or statistics but can fall short of 30 credits in algebra, geometry and analysis.
- Often short: a BCA, B.Com, BBA or BA, which rarely include 30 credits of university algebra, geometry and analysis.

English at CEFR level B2 or higher, written and spoken. [2] The 2026/27 call assesses language proficiency through an online interview. You can upload an English certificate if you have one, but neither the call nor the regulations list a specific test or score. [1][2]

- Remote oral exam: in the 2026/27 call, at least twice as many candidates as places were invited. The exam is held in English, checks your subject knowledge, cultural background and English, and is mandatory for admission. [1]
- Rankings: two merit rankings are drawn up, one for scholarship places and one for places without a scholarship. In a tie, the younger candidate ranks higher. [1]

The 2026/27 call offered 30 places to non-EU applicants living abroad: 9 with a scholarship and 21 without. [1]
- Scholarship places: for applicants whose household income is below €26,500 if independent, €41,500 for a two-person family or €54,000 for a family of three or more. Winners show this with an ISEE parificato by 30 October 2026. Students from particularly poor countries use a certificate from the Italian mission instead.
- Places without a scholarship: for applicants whose household income is above those limits.
- What the scholarship covers: the enrolment fee, free accommodation, campus canteen meals and pocket money of about €3,600.
- Keeping it: winners who earn fewer than 20 ECTS by 30 November 2027 must repay what they received, and renewal for 2027/28 needs at least 30 ECTS by 10 August 2027.
Scholarship winners paid €18.75 at enrolment, and winners of a place without a scholarship paid €1,000 in university fees. [1]
2026/27 deadlines
Applications closed at 11:59 pm Italian time on 30 March 2026. The deadline for conditional enrolment was 10 June 2026, later extended to 17 June 2026, and places left vacant were reallocated by 16 July 2026, with enrolment by 31 July 2026. Enrolment is finalised in person at UniCal's Welcome Office, by 30 October 2026 for this intake. [1][3]

You apply on UniCal's Esse3 portal, choosing the call for extra-EU students, for one master's degree only, and pay a €10 fee. You can upload the first page of your passport, your CV, your bachelor's degree, your transcript of records, the syllabus of all your courses and any English certificate. [1]
Scholarship winners receive UniCal's acceptance letter through the Universitaly portal. After enrolment you hand in your foreign degree with an official Italian translation, legalised or with an Apostille, plus a declaration of value or CIMEA certificates of comparability and verification, by 28 February 2027 for the 2026/27 intake. About the programme
Mathematics is a two-year master's degree (laurea magistrale, class LM-40, 120 ECTS) taught in English by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Calabria (UniCal). [2] Classes run on the university's residential campus at Arcavacata di Rende, just outside Cosenza.
The first year is structured around core areas of advanced mathematics. The second year is highly customisable through optional courses and electives, and your thesis follows the study path you build. It suits graduates in mathematics, or in a related subject with a strong mathematical base, who are aiming for research, teaching or quantitative work.

The course spans algebra, geometry, mathematical analysis, mathematical physics, numerical analysis, probability and statistics, and mathematics education. How the programme is taught
Teaching is based on lectures and exercises in class or in the lab, with seminars and tutorials that support students who find parts of the course difficult. Core units are taught in English, while some optional units may be offered in Italian. Curricular internships at companies, public or private bodies or research groups are part of the plan, and study, internship and thesis research periods abroad, for example through Erasmus, can be recognised.
