Mathematics at the University of Calabria is a two-year, 120 ECTS master's degree (class LM-40) taught entirely in English on the Arcavacata di Rende campus. It pairs a structured first year with a flexible second year. Non-EU students pay a flat fee or win a scholarship place, so it can be tuition-free for eligible students.
Entry requirements
- A bachelor's degree in Mathematical Sciences (Italian class L-35) or an equivalent foreign degree.
- Holders of other degrees need at least 54 ECTS in mathematics, computer science, physics or statistics, including at least 30 ECTS in mathematics.
- Solid grounding in calculus, linear algebra, analysis, topology and complex analysis, probability and statistics, and basic numerical analysis, with confidence in rigorous proofs.

About the programme
Mathematics is a two-year master's degree (laurea magistrale, class LM-40, 120 ECTS) taught entirely in English by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Calabria (UniCal). Classes run on the university's residential campus at Arcavacata di Rende, just outside Cosenza.
The first year is structured around core areas of advanced mathematics. The second year is highly customisable through optional courses and electives, and your thesis follows the study path you build. It suits graduates in mathematics, or in a related subject with a strong mathematical base, who are aiming for research, teaching or quantitative work.
What you will study
The course spans algebra, geometry, mathematical analysis, mathematical physics, numerical analysis, probability and statistics, and mathematics education. The department notes that 36 ECTS can be used to build skills in another field, such as science, engineering, economics, linguistics or philosophy. Units in the 2026/27 study plan include:

How the programme is taught
Teaching mixes lectures, tutorials and lab sessions, with regular contact with lecturers and mentors. Curricular internships are part of the offer, and the department also points to study and internship periods at universities abroad. In 2026/27 the first semester runs from late September to mid December.

Mathematics offers 9 scholarship places for non-EU applicants, and winners pay only a token enrolment charge while receiving free housing, canteen meals and about €3,600 in pocket money. Other non-EU students on the visa route pay a flat €1,000 a year for 2026/27, regional tax included. UniCal also runs its own right-to-study grants based on an ISEE parificato, so this programme can be tuition-free for eligible students.

In the 2026/27 call the course had 30 places for non-EU applicants living abroad: 9 with a scholarship and 21 without. You apply on UniCal's Esse3 portal under the call for extra-EU students, may choose only one degree and pay a €10 fee. After a CV and qualifications review, at least twice as many candidates as places are invited to an online oral exam, and English is checked in an online interview.
The 2026/27 deadline was 30 March 2026, and UniCal expects the 2027/28 call around January 2027. Admitted students then pre-enrol on Universitaly, apply for a type D study visa and hand in a declaration of value or CIMEA statement during the first year.
