About the programme

Civil Engineering for Infrastructural Regeneration (CEIR) is a two-year master's degree (laurea magistrale, class LM-23, civil engineering, 120 ECTS) taught in English by the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Calabria (UniCal), on its campus at Arcavacata di Rende near Cosenza.

It trains highly specialised engineers to manage infrastructure and territory sustainably, and to restore structures whose physical and mechanical performance has declined. The approach is interdisciplinary, and the course suits civil and environmental engineering graduates interested in structures, water, geotechnics, transport or seismic risk. Part-time enrolment is possible.

What you will study

You choose one of two specialisations. Regenerative Infrastructures for Sustainable Environments (RISE) covers water resources, flood, landslide and seismic risk, and low-impact transport systems. Advanced Resilient Materials and Structures (ARMS) tackles complex problems in materials and structural behaviour. Units in the 2026/27 plan include:

  • Seismic Retrofitting and Design of Structures (9 ECTS)
  • Computational Structural Analysis of Infrastructures and Nonlinear Structural Analysis
  • (Infra)structural Health Monitoring and Control, and Structural Rehabilitation of Buildings and Bridges
  • Soil Dynamics and Geotechnical Engineering for Land Protection
  • Sustainable Urban Water Management, and River Hydraulics and Stream Environmental Restoration
  • Intelligent Transportation Systems for Smart Mobility, and Sustainable Transportation: Theory and Practice
  • Advanced Structural Design, Dynamics of Structures, and Theory and Analysis of Structures
  • An internship (9 ECTS) and a final exam

How the programme is taught

The study plans take an international, multidisciplinary line with a strong focus on sustainability and infrastructure. The department highlights close contact between lecturers and students, and awards for high-achieving students. Every study path includes a 9 ECTS internship before the final exam.

Career paths

Graduates can work as freelance engineers or join public and private bodies and companies in building, construction and infrastructure. Typical areas are:

  • Design, monitoring and maintenance of sustainable and resilient structures
  • Water resource management and flood, landslide and seismic risk mitigation
  • Planning and management of public and private transport systems
  • Rehabilitation of existing buildings, bridges and networks

After passing the state qualifying exam, graduates can register in Section A of the Italian Register of Engineers.

Fees and scholarships

CEIR reserves 9 non-EU places with a UniCal scholarship, which covers the enrolment fee and adds free housing, canteen meals and roughly €3,600 in pocket money. On a place without a scholarship, the 2026/27 fee for non-EU visa applicants is a flat €1,000 a year including regional tax. Right-to-study grants, handled by UniCal itself and based on an ISEE parificato, are a second route, and this programme can be tuition-free for eligible students.

How to apply from outside the EU

The 2026/27 call gave CEIR 18 places for non-EU applicants living abroad, split evenly between scholarship and non-scholarship places. Applications are made on UniCal's Esse3 portal in the call for extra-EU students, for one degree only, with a €10 fee. Candidates are first screened on CV and qualifications; a shortlist of at least twice the places then sits an online oral exam, and English is assessed online.

The 2026/27 deadline was 30 March 2026, and the 2027/28 call is expected around January 2027. Admitted students pre-enrol on Universitaly, apply for a type D study visa and submit a declaration of value or CIMEA statement.

How ApplyAZ helps

If this programme fits your goals, ApplyAZ can include it in a shortlist of 20 to 30 English-taught programmes at Italian public universities. We write your CV and a tailored statement of purpose, submit your applications and Universitaly pre-enrolment, file your DSU scholarship application and prepare your visa file, with a named person on each stage. The university decides admission, the region decides the scholarship and the consulate decides the visa. See how ApplyAZ works or check your eligibility.
