Detailed entry requirements

Current admission status: the University of Bologna states that Wellness, Sport and Health is deactivated and has not accepted new enrolments since academic year 2025/26. Meeting its former entry criteria does not create an application route for a new student.

Historical qualifications, not a current admission offer

  • The 2024/25 teaching regulation required a first-cycle degree, a three-year university diploma or a suitable foreign qualification. Listed backgrounds included sports sciences, psychology, sociology, education and the four health-professions degree classes.
  • For a different degree class, the historical route required recognition of at least 60 CFU in the essential basic and specialised subjects of sports sciences class L-22. Foreign qualifications needed an individual suitability assessment.
  • Personal preparation was assessed from the curriculum and could include a supplementary interview. English B2 was required, with certificate, interview and specified exemption routes. The regulation also included an Italian B2 provision, with study-plan language activities for foreign students lacking that level.

What the closure means for applicants

  • These criteria explain the former programme only. They are not requirements for a currently open 2026/27 intake. Older calls, regulations and study plans remaining online should not be treated as evidence that new applications are accepted.
  • A new applicant should choose an active degree in the university’s current catalogue and check that degree’s own requirements. This closure notice does not identify a replacement programme. Existing-student teaching or examinations are a separate matter from new enrolment.

Sources and verification

  1. University of Bologna. Wellness, Sport and Health: programme enrolment, deactivation notice. closure effective 2025/26; reviewed 6 October 2026.
  2. University of Bologna. Wellness, Sport and Health (LM-68): teaching regulations, Article 1. 2024/25 historical regulation; reviewed 6 October 2026.

Entry requirements: short questions and answers

Can I enrol as a new student?

No. The university says new enrolment stopped from 2025/26.

Are the older requirements still an application route?

No. They describe the former programme and do not reopen admission.

Which degree backgrounds were accepted historically?

Sports sciences, psychology, sociology, education and health professions were listed. Other backgrounds required a subject-credit assessment.

Was English required?

The former regulation required B2 English. Its certificate and exemption rules are historical.

Does the university name a replacement here?

The reviewed closure notice does not name a replacement. Check the current degree catalogue.

Can existing students continue their studies?

New-enrolment closure and existing-student arrangements are different. Current students should follow their own cohort’s university instructions.

Wellness, Sport and Health LM-68: Study in Italy in English at the University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum Università di Bologna)

Wellness, Sport and Health LM-68 is a two-year master’s degree that blends movement science, preventative medicine, and management skills. It belongs to a growing group of English-taught programmes in Italy. When you study in Italy in English, you enjoy a rich culture, modern labs, and fair costs at public Italian universities such as the University of Bologna. This historic institution charges income-linked fees. International students can also tap into scholarships for international students in Italy, including the DSU grant, to reduce living expenses even further.

English-taught programmes in Italy: Course Vision and Skills

The master’s sets one clear goal: train experts who can design, deliver, and assess evidence-based wellness plans that improve quality of life across all ages. Understanding the interplay between sport, health, and community is central to the Italian lifestyle, and this English-language curriculum captures that spirit.

What You Will Learn

  • Human movement sciences: biomechanics, motor control, and exercise physiology.
  • Clinical foundations: nutrition, preventive cardiology, and chronic disease management.
  • Sport management: event planning, facility design, and financial oversight.
  • Research methods: statistics, project evaluation, and scientific writing.
  • Behaviour change: counselling techniques, motivational coaching, and digital health tools.

Small-group workshops take place in high-tech labs outfitted with motion-capture cameras, metabolic carts, and force platforms. Field trips to elite training centres and public health agencies show how theory meets practice. By the end of the programme you can:

  1. Plan safe exercise for youth, adults, seniors, and special populations.
  2. Analyse biomechanical data to prevent injury.
  3. Coordinate multi-disciplinary teams that include doctors, dietitians, and psychologists.
  4. Evaluate the impact of wellness policies on communities or corporate staff.

Graduates gain a robust toolkit sought by sports clubs, rehabilitation clinics, and municipality wellbeing offices across Europe.

Study in Italy in English: Learning Path, Entry, and Campus Life

Entry Requirements

To join this programme you need a bachelor’s degree with at least 180 ECTS credits in exercise science, physiotherapy, medicine, psychology, or a related field. B2 English proficiency (IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 90, or equivalent) is also required. The admission process involves:

  1. Online application: we upload transcripts, CV, and a motivation letter.
  2. Academic check: faculty verify your prior coursework in anatomy, physiology, and methods.
  3. Interview: a brief video call to assess your goals and language skills.
  4. Conditional offer: receive an admission letter to start visa and housing steps.

Teaching Style

Lecturers adopt an applied approach. Seminars mix theory with live demonstrations. In the biomechanics lab you capture force-plate data, then interpret graphs in break-out rooms. Case studies on global sporting events train you to handle logistical challenges. The thesis requires an original research project; many students run intervention trials on campus athletes or community fitness groups.

Campus Life

The University of Bologna spreads across five Italian cities, yet the Wellness, Sport and Health master is based in Bologna itself. The historic heart has 62 kilometres of porticoes, so you walk to class shielded from sun and rain. Sports facilities include:

  • A 50-metre Olympic pool, open year-round.
  • Strength and conditioning gyms with student discounts.
  • Athletics tracks where elite sprinters train alongside amateurs.

Clubs run weekly basketball, volleyball, and five-a-side football leagues. Free Italian courses up to C2 level help you settle, though lectures remain entirely in English. Cultural events, open-air cinema, jazz festivals, and food fairs, fill the calendar, turning classmates into lifelong friends.

Public Italian Universities: Funding Routes, DSU Grant, Scholarships

Public Italian universities follow a progressive fee model tied to family income. The ISEE declaration (Indicatore della Situazione Economica Equivalente) sets your bracket. Fees follow family income (ISEE), so the programme can be tuition-free for eligible students.

DSU Grant

The DSU grant (Diritto allo Studio Universitario) is a state right, not a privilege. Benefits include:

  • Full tuition exemption.
  • One hot meal per day at canteens.
  • Annual allowance up to €6,000 for rent, books, and local transport.

Both EU and non-EU students can apply if they meet income and merit criteria. Grant results arrive each autumn.

Other Scholarships for International Students in Italy

  • Unibo Action 2: a scholarship worth €11,000 per year for high achievers regardless of income.
  • Regional Prizes: internships in gyms, hospitals, and wellness resorts that pay a small stipend.
  • ApplyAZ merit awards: extra support for early applicants using our platform.

Most calls open in spring with online submissions. ApplyAZ keeps you on schedule and checks every form for completeness.

Working While You Study

Italian law allows non-EU students to work up to 20 hours per week during semesters and full-time in holidays. Typical part-time roles include:

  • Fitness instructor at campus gym.
  • Lifeguard at city pool.
  • Sports event staff for marathons and cycling tours.
  • Research assistant in physiology labs.

Income from student jobs rarely affects your DSU eligibility, though we still verify the thresholds.

Living budget, career prospects and ApplyAZ support

Cost of Living

Bologna is cheaper than Rome and Milan but offers similar services. Monthly budget for a careful student:

  • Shared flat near campus: €380 to 450
  • Utilities and Wi-Fi: €60
  • Groceries and canteen: €250
  • Transport pass: €27

With the DSU grant, many students cover rent and food entirely.

Career Prospects

Italy views sport as part of its public health strategy, so experts in wellness find roles quickly. Paths include:

  • Strength and conditioning coach: train athletes in football, cycling, and motor racing teams.
  • Corporate wellness manager: design activity plans to reduce sick leave.
  • Community health officer: launch exercise programmes in schools and senior clubs.
  • Clinical exercise physiologist: aid patient recovery in rehabilitation centres.
  • Event coordinator: organise charity runs, triathlons, and fitness expos.
  • Researcher or doctoral candidate: explore biomechanics, nutrition, or digital coaching apps.

Graduates can convert their study permit into a 12-month job-search visa. Employers value English-educated professionals who understand science and can address international clients.

Ready for this programme?

If this programme fits your goals, ApplyAZ can include it in a shortlist of 20 to 30 English-taught programmes at Italian public universities. We write your CV and a tailored statement of purpose, submit your applications and Universitaly pre-enrolment, help you file your DSU scholarship application at the right time and in the right format, and prepare your visa file, with a named person on each stage. The university decides admission, the region decides the scholarship and the consulate decides the visa, so nobody can promise an outcome. See how ApplyAZ works.

Applying from outside the EU

Students from India and other non-EU countries apply with the school-leaving or degree qualifications the university asks for, sometimes with a CIMEA statement or a declaration of value. Non-EU applicants living abroad then complete pre-enrolment on the Universitaly portal and, once the university approves it, apply for a type D study visa at the Italian consulate or visa centre. Deadlines differ by university, so we track the official call for this programme.
