Detailed entry requirements
Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology admission depends on the prior qualification, the subject preparation specified below and the applicable language/enrolment route. The programme rules are verified against the official 2026/27 regulation. Eligibility assessment and final enrolment are separate stages.
Accepted degrees and alternative biotechnology preparation
- The programme requires a bachelor’s degree, three-year university diploma or a suitable recognised foreign qualification. The listed curricular degree routes are Biotechnology L-2 or former class 01, and Biological Sciences L-13 or former class 12.
- Another first-cycle or recognised equivalent qualification can qualify with at least 90 CFU in the basic and core disciplinary subjects of the L-2 Biotechnology class. The commission must also find adequate personal preparation; meeting a degree-title route alone is not the whole assessment.
- Expected foundational knowledge includes chemistry, physics, mathematics, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, physiology and pharmacology.
Eight preparation-credit groups in the 2026/27 regulation
- The commission checks the following minima in the listed former sectors or their corresponding updated sectors: 3 CFU in MAT/01 to MAT/09, MED/01, INF/01 or the listed SECS-S statistics fields; 3 CFU in FIS/01 to FIS/08; and 6 CFU in CHIM/01 to CHIM/06 or CHIM/11.
- The biological preparation separately includes 3 CFU in BIO/10; 6 CFU in BIO/05, BIO/06, BIO/16, BIO/17, BIO/13 or VET/01; and 3 CFU in BIO/11 or BIO/12.
- A further 6-CFU group covers BIO/09, BIO/18, MED/03, BIO/14, VET/07 or VET/02. The final 6-CFU group covers MED/04, MED/06, MED/07, BIO/19, AGR/16, VET/03, VET/06 or VET/05. These eight subject minima supplement the degree/curricular route and must not be reduced to one undifferentiated credit total.
Preparation assessment, deficiencies and teaching language
- For the specified L’Aquila Biotechnology and Biological Sciences bachelor’s graduates, adequate personal preparation is recognised automatically from their course structure. This preparation recognition does not waive the general degree, enrolment or foreign-document requirements.
- Where the transcript does not satisfy the listed preparation criteria, the appointed commission can interview the applicant. Adequate knowledge in the deficient area can support admission; otherwise it assigns activities or a syllabus for independent preparation and conducts a further interview. A positive subsequent interview is compulsory for admission under that remedial route.
- The regulation states that teaching is in Italian, with some English courses in the Medical-Translational and Pharmaceutical curricula. The course is therefore not entirely English-taught. Foreign applicants must satisfy the Italian evidence/test conditions applicable to their chosen course and enrolment category.
- The university’s international enrolment guidance specifies B2 evidence in Italian or English according to the programme language. The general international English-master’s selection should not be assumed to apply to this Italian-based LM-9 programme merely because some units use English.
Foreign qualifications and final enrolment documents
- A foreign qualification must be recognised as suitable for second-cycle study. Prepare the final bachelor’s certificate, official transcript in English or Italian, and the qualification-recognition evidence applicable to your case: CIMEA comparability/verification statements, a Declaration of Value, or an accepted English Diploma Supplement.
- The university permits its documented direct-verification procedure in qualifying cases. This needs confirmation in the acceptance letter and communication to the student registry; an applicant cannot simply declare that recognition evidence is unnecessary.
- Applicants who require an Italian study visa also complete Universitaly pre-enrolment. The university’s checklist includes passport photograph, passport, motivation letter, CV, transcript, degree or permitted temporary certificate, and B2 evidence in the teaching language. The academic offer and visa decision are separate steps.
- Match language evidence to the selected curriculum. The international enrolment webpage contains some older dates alongside its 2026 application information, so an older enrolment deadline should not be used as a newly confirmed 2026/27 deadline. Follow the applicable annual notice and registry instructions.

About the programme
Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology is a two-year, 120-CFU LM-9 master’s at the University of L’Aquila. Its 2026/27 regulation describes Italian teaching, with some English courses in the Medical-Translational and Pharmaceutical curricula.
The degree develops advanced biotechnology preparation for medical and pharmaceutical applications. The first year provides shared foundations, while the second year differentiates the three curricula. Applicants should assess their previous scientific preparation and the teaching-language requirements before enrolment.
